Captain's Newsletter - 28 February 2021

Last day of February today, how come the shortest month of the year became the longest? Come on 29th March! Will be great to get back out on the golf course I am sure you will all agree. Its been a long winter but better times ahead. England Golf have now released ‘A roadmap for the return back to golf in England’ Please see link below if you have not already seen it;

https://www.englandgolf.org/roadmap-for-the-return-to-golf-infographic/

We are currently awaiting further clarification from The Club Company.

Dates for Competitions During 2021

So far this quarter we have missed many of our planned events. It is my intention to play all abandoned competitions, if possible, throughout the season. Therefore, we will have quite a few changes to the calendar, which will be updated on IG when confirmed. It is expected all dates will be in place for our return on 29th March.

Away Weekend 2021

Following the governments announcement on 22nd February it has been suggested that we move the 'Away Weekend' to the end of June when all current restrictions, hopefully, will have been lifted. This will enable us to share rooms, and enjoy a meal together following a brilliant days golf. It is unfortunate for those of you who are unable to attend, but, at this moment in time, as you are all aware, we have to follow government guidelines. Thank you to Nikki B who is finalising the dates on Monday. Further information will be sent out when we have confirmation from the venue.

Solheim Cup 2021

I am sure most of you will have heard that our opponents for the Solheim Cup, Mill Green Golf Club are under new ownership. Unfortunately, we are now no longer able to compete with them for this biennial trophy event. But the good news is, with the backing of the ladies section committee, I have been in touch with The Essex golf club. The Essex is another ‘Club Company' golf club who are delighted at the prospect of being involved in this special event. Therefore, we have added the date of Friday 3rd September to our diary and have invited The Essex to Chesfield Downs. So put the date in your diary and we can show The Essex what a great event it really is!

Captain's Newsletter - 21 February 2021

So, I think I know where everyone will be tomorrow! Monday 22nd!! Lets hope Boris has some good news for us all. Until then I have a few snippets of information for you.

New CEO

I am sure many of you know we have a new CEO of the Club Company, Richard Calvert. Richard joined The Club Company, as chief executive, in early December. He has over 30 years’ experience in the travel and leisure sector. I am sure you would like to join me in welcoming Richard to the Club Company. We look forward to meeting him in the not too distant future.

Exciting Times

During Lockdown the driving range has been experiencing a busy time. Work is currently being undertaken to install ‘TopTracer’ in 16 of our driving range bays. TopTracer tracks the flight path of your golf shot and displays it on one of the 21-inch touch screen monitors to be installed in each bay. It will be possible to watch your game the same way you watch your favourite pro golfers on TV, plus many more activities. There will also be a bar area supporting the driving range serving some hot food, snacks, beer and soft drinks. Launch Week will be dependent on government restrictions. Please note: You will still be able to go and practice with a bucket of balls in the usual manner.

Locker Room

Kathy C and myself went on a day trip to the ladies locker room last week. We found many interesting items, here are a few. Perhaps you recognise some of them?

Or did you loose your glasses? 16 pairs!!!!

If so, please rescue them when we return to golf, Many thanks!

Golf Rules Practice

I would like to say a big thank you to Julie R who has continued to supply us with golf rules on a daily basis, well done Julie keep it up! For those of you who are not on the WhatApp group and those who would like a further 'brush up' go to the link below which I think you will find very useful.

Captain's Newsletter - 14 February 2021

Happy Valentines Day! This must be the coldest Valentines day on record. In fact, it has also been the coldest January across the UK since 2010. Would be far too cold for golf - me thinks - every cloud and all that!

The bad weather has unfortunately made it impossible for Lee, and his significantly reduced team, to carry out the planned ‘drill and fill’ work on the greens scheduled for 8th February. However, a warmer week ahead is forecast, so fingers crossed. On another note its been a great week for some Chesfield Downs Ladies with so many of you now having had your first dose of the vaccine. Every day it's getting closer for those of us who are still waiting.

Ping Mixed Betterball Competition

I am delighted to say that we now have a date in the diary for the Ping Mixed Betterball Competition, Saturday 29th May 2021 (subject to government guidelines). 5 day members will be granted courtesy of the course for this competition. It is a similar event to the Ladies Ping Pairs which is so popular within our section. So I thought I would give you advance warning to ‘save the day’. This new mixed event for club golfers will see the top 50 pairs in the country qualify for the national final at Thonock Park on Tuesday 7th September, 2021. Winners and runners-up from each club – even if they don’t make it to the final – will receive prizes from PING. England Golf have not released all the competition rules at present but for further information go to: https://www.englandgolf.org/england-golf-and-ping-announce-new-mixed-betterball-event/

County News

Until we have a route map out of lockdown, the county is working on the premise of ‘business as usual’, with that in mind, please see links below for the current Championship schedule of events for 2021. When more information on government restrictions is released, the county will communicate their plans for rescheduling, if necessary. All 2021 Entry Forms and Flyers for the whole season can be found on the HG website and can be viewed by clicking the links below.

Captain's Newsletter - 7 February 2021

January is now behind us, and for those of you who are now enjoying the odd glass of wine, I would like to say a huge 'thank you' for all your donations to our charity following your dry January. Anyone for no sweets February? You can tell February is here, looking out for the snow forecasts and freezing temperatures, makes me think "I expect the course is closed today" But, of course, it is closed, but on a brighter note it seems we are now on the home straight, so hang in there. It's nearly time to get those golf clothes aired, clean the clubs, do those knee exercises so you can bend down easily to pick up your birdie putts. March is on the way!

Safe Golf

Great news! Chesfield Downs Golf and Country Club was awarded accreditation to the SafeGolf initiative on February 2nd 2021. Many thanks go to our Welfare Officer, Margaret G, and Barry who have worked very hard through the SafeGolf process. This demonstrates the clubs commitment to the standards set by the SafeGolf partnership in safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, as well as adults at risk in the sport of golf.’ To view our Safeguarding Policies click here.

November Sale/Auction

Some of our members have been extremely busy making golf head covers, hats and rag dolls for our November/December sale of homemade items.
Well done ladies you are amazing!

A few ladies have been asking if you can donate secondhand or homemade toys to Lister Hospital. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 this is not permitted. If you wish to donate to "The Magic of Play" or "The Lister Butterfly Service" please go to the Justgiving website link at the bottom of this newsletter, many thanks.

Coffee Morning Zoom

During this time it is extremely important for us to all keep well and in contact with each other to avoid feelings of isolation. Therefore, we would like to arrange some virtual coffee mornings via Zoom. If you would like to see some happy faces for a friendly chat please email or WhatsApp me to be involved. The aim is to have small groups of approximately 6 per session. Alternatively, if you wish to have someone to go for a walk with, this can also be arranged.

Keep in touch.
That's all for this week!
