Captain's Newsletter - 31 January 2021

Well January is finally over, I can hear all those ladies who have been doing dry January sigh with relief. Well done ladies, you have massive respect. I don't think I would have lasted more than a day!

Hopefully you are all keeping well and safe. We are experiencing some difficult times at the moment, but as we move into spring, and many members are receiving their vaccine, things should start to improve. Fantastic achievement by the NHS, they do us proud. Until we get back to our beloved Chesfield Downs there are only a few bits of news/information for you.

Course Update

Changing rapidly every week from this:

To this!  What a difference a week can make.

I think would take a penalty shot instead of playing out of that! (I'm always in that ditch). Photographs courtesy of Paula M, whilst out enjoying her daily walks! Thanks Paula.

Despite the adverse weather and the course being closed it is great that Lee (and his limited ground staff) are able to continue to work on the course. Part of the greens drainage work has been completed on holes 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th, 12th, 16th & 17th. This should help with the drainage on the greens. The main 'drill and fill' on the worst affected holes 2nd, 6th and 14th should be commencing on 8th February, weather permitting.

(Lee's report) Around 80 separate holes individually hand drilled and filled. The drills remove soil, allowing lateral movement within the root zone and releasing compaction pressure. Drilling improves surface water infiltration and percolation, reducing the soggy, spongy conditions common in "push-up" and old clay-based greens. Deep holes encourage deep, strong roots and drilling depth is always consistent.

County News

We received an email from the County Development Officer stating; 'It is with regret the Committee has taken the decision to cancel the Ladies’ London Foursomes which was due to take place at Moor Park this year, concerns over the health and safety of the competitors being uppermost in our minds'. So sorry ladies if any of you were thinking of entering. Next year maybe?

Some of our ladies attended Jo's online class 'chipping and putting' via zoom on Thursday. There has been some very good feedback. Keep a look out for more on IG.

Captain's Newsletter - 24 January 2021

Good evening ladies,

Week 3 of lockdown - done!

I hope you are all keeping well, its been great hearing many of you are now being invited to have the vaccine. As far as golf is concerned the course remains empty, but we still have some exciting news!

England Golf Medal Regional Finals
Jackie R has been selected to apply for a place in the England Golf Regional Finals to be held at Ely City Golf Club, Cambridge, in June. England Golf have now changed the criteria for this Competition, for further information go to:

https://www.englandgolf.org/club-news-qualifying-criteria-for-2021-womens-medal-regional-finals/

Our commiserations go to Kathy D our 2019 winner, who was selected to go to the Regional Finals in 2020 but unfortunately along with many other events was sadly cancelled due to Covid 19.

Annual Subscription
Our first committee meeting for 2021 took place on Wednesday via Zoom. Following a discussion about the sections accounts, we felt, due to the cancellation of some competitions last year and the possibility of future cancellations, it was decided that we would not be asking lady section members for the annual £10 subscription at this point in time. However, this will be reviewed during the next quarter and any payment, if required, will be calculated on a pro rata basis.

Past Events
Last weeks newsletter photographs were from 2016 Jubilee Jug, Kathy D was the Lady Captain, celebrating 25 years of Chesfield Downs, great memories!

Todays WhatsApp Competition - Build a Snowman!

1st prize goes to Jacky S with her amazing creation - Having a break on the 9th!!! Well done Jacky!

Captain's Newsletter - 17 January 2021

Good evening ladies,

Well done everyone! 2 weeks of lockdown over! A step nearer to golf? I hope so.

Again, not a lot of golfing news to report. When rain stops play at Wimbledon they show past clips of the championships, so, thought I would entertain you all with some past photographs of one of our great functions.

Can you tell what year was it? And what was the event?

Challenges: Anyone up for a challenge?

As we have already had one major function for this year's charity cancelled (The Winter Invitation) I have been racking my brains of ways to raise some cash for our very worthy charity this year, ‘The Magic of Play’ and ‘The Lister Butterfly Service’. I would like to invite any of you 'crafty' ladies to my challenge! It is my intention to auction/sell these products in November ready for Christmas Greensomes! So you have 10 months to make one, ten or as many as you like.

Christmas Head Covers
Christmas Bobble Hats
Or even matching Club Covers and Hats???

Captain's Newsletter - 10 January 2021

Good evening ladies,

I hope you are all keeping well and safe during these uncertain times. Better days ahead I am sure.

Well, not a lot of golfing news to report. The next big event on the agenda is the Megan Bonner Par 3 Championship which is due to take place on 25th February. Fingers crossed we will be back in full force by then.

Winter KO

Unfortunately the winter KO has been suspended due to government restrictions. A new deadline will be set for completing matches when it is appropriate to do so.

Pearson Matches

The Inter County Pearson Management Committee met on January 8th and it was decided, due to the uncertainty, to get matches played during the current lockdown situation it was agreed that, with regret, the competition must be cancelled until Autumn 2021/22. I would like to thank Linda B for all her time and organisation of the matches.

Some Good News

A few of our ladies have started receiving their first dose of the Covid 19 vaccine. Jenny has just had hers! Great news Jenny! We look forward to hearing that many more have had the call!

Chesfield Downs Ladies Section 'Just Giving Page'

We now have a Chesfield Downs Ladies’ Section ‘Just Giving Page’. This will allow the transfer of funds seamlessly to our charity during 2021. It’s a great way of advertising our charity and means everyone can watch the amount going up and up! However, we still plan to have a presentation of the final amount raised after our Greensomes in December. Please feel free to donate at any time!

Captain's Newsletter - 3 January 2021

Good afternoon ladies’

Happy New Year!

I can’t believe we are in January already! I had hoped to be starting my captaincy year on a better note but unfortunately due to government restrictions we are still in Tier 4 and it appears we will be for a few weeks yet.

So for the moment this means:
No block bookings till further notice
Maximum of 2 balls allowed
Can only book Tee times 7 days in advance
Catering facilities, if available, remain take away only

Although this is not the start to the year we were all wishing, we will make the most of the situation. Kathy and myself will be in constant discussions with Barry to ensure we can get back to some sort of normality as soon as possible.

Winter Eclectic

I have proposed this to the committee and we are unanimous that we would like the 12 hole winter eclectic to go ahead. To make this possible we have had to change the rules a little (just this once). I hope you will also find it an agreeable solution during the current pandemic to keep playing the competitive golf we all love. So;

Rules for Winter Eclectic 2021
Book your own Tee times
Ladies must play with another member of the club (male or female)
Photograph your completed score card and send to Hazel following your round
Your playing partner must agree your score (just show each other your cards, NO signing required)
Once you have started to play a round you cannot decide to change your playing day
You must putt out on at least 3 holes on each round
No entry payment required but a contribution towards tea & cake when conditions allow

Dates for Winter Eclectic
Round 1 7th Jan - 13th Jan (Play any day during this period)
Round 2 14th Jan - 20th Jan (Play any day during this period)
Round 3 21st Jan - 27th Jan (Play any day during this period)
Round 4 28th Jan - 3rd Feb (Play any day during this period)
Round 5 4th Feb - 10th Feb (Play any day during this period)
Round 6 11th Feb - 17th Feb (Play any day during this period)
Round 7 18th Feb - 24th Feb (Play any day during this period)

I hope you enjoy this different 12 hole eclectic. Hopefully by the time we have finished we will be out of tier 4!

Winter Knock Out

The draw sheet remains on the notice board (opposite the ladies changing room).

Dates for Matches to be played by;
Round 1 to be played by 28th February
Round 2 to be played by 31st March
Final to be played by 30th April

Committee Meetings
We will be holding our first committee meeting on Thursday 21st January, via Zoom. If anyone has anything they would like raised please email me.

Helpers
If you would like to help in the running of the section there is a sheet to sign up on the notice board, or simply email me. Any help running the section is very much appreciated and ensures the smooth running of our great club.

Booking Tee Times
Barry has requested our understanding and support when booking tee times. It has been noted that some members are booking a two ball with anonymous partner. The restriction of 2 balls for the moment is so that it is fair for everyone. Please arrange who you are playing with prior to booking, many thanks.

I am looking forward to an exciting year and feel very privileged to have a team of such lovely ladies to work with. Hopefully going into Spring we will see the return of normal golf functions.

Kind regards
Pauline
