Captain's Newsletter - 4 July 2021

Great sporting week with tennis fans seeing British wildcard Emma Raducanu get through to the last 16 at Wimbledon, and England's brilliant win against Germany followed by victory in Rome against Ukraine - its coming home! Not to mention last Sunday, when we saw 27 Chesfield Downs ladies head off to Staverton Park for the rescheduled ‘Away Weekend’. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us but this did not deter Chesfield from the fun filled agenda planned by our amazing organisers Nikki & Nicola. Chesfield ladies did us proud in their allocated ‘country team’ colours, bearing flags, and masses of team sprit. Great weekend, would recommend you get your name down early for next years epic event!

Well done ladies!

Thursday saw ladies competing in the alternative date for the 'England Golf Trust Stableford Qualifier'. The purpose of the England Golf Trust Stableford Competition is to raise funds to support young golfers of any level who, without some financial assistance, would not be able to continue playing the game. A very worthy cause. Winners from both divisions have their scores added together and the top 30 pairs will be invited to play in the National Final which is played as a Better Ball pairs competition at King’s Norton Golf Club, to be held on 17th August 2021. Congratulations go to Sarah - division one winner and Kathy M - division two winner, well done ladies great scores, good luck!

Captain's Newsletter - 20 June 2021

Rain, rain and more rain! Lets hope this week brings back the sunshine and stays with us particularly for next weekend as 30 of us travel to Staverton Park for our ‘Away Weekend. Nikki and Nicola have an abundance of fun planned along with some golf, personally I can’t wait. Tuesday Club on 29th June will go ahead as planned for those of you who wish to play '5 clubs and a putter' further details on IG.

Charity Day 15th July

This years charity day will be a little different from those we have been used to in the past. There was a suggestion to postpone it to another date when restrictions might be lifted, with this in mind the ladies committee met to reassess. It was decided, unanimously, to go ahead with 15th July as so many plans had already been put in place. Therefore, we ask for your cooperation in helping us to make the day a success, whilst assisting us to keep the running as smooth as possible under the present circumstances. There will still be our two course meal, but it will be on a rolling basis, we would appreciate when you have finished dining to move swiftly into the bar area where coffee and mints will be served. Unfortunately, no presentation of prizes will be possible but winners will be congratulated personally and asked to collect their prize from the presentation table. We still aim to have all our stalls in the bar area prior to the competition, so bring along all your unspent cash and we will help you to give it to a good cause whilst having fun. Information will be on the notice board this week allocating our volunteers their tasks. Bottles and 'bric a brac' items for raffles will be gratefully accepted.

Past Captains' Day

Congratulations go to Amelia F who came in with an amazing 40 points today and also won the longest drive! Well done Amelia.

Captain's Newsletter - 6 June 2021

Apologies ladies but IG is having some technical issues, therefore we have no images in this newsletter, not even our logos!

Amidst all this beautiful weather we had a day of rain on Friday which is when Kathy C and I went to The Essex. It was a double headed theme, play the course and meet the Solheim Cup opposition. Despite the pouring rain and having to abandon play we had the most enjoyable day! We met Shelia (Lady Captain) and Julie (Vice Captain) who were both very welcoming and excited to be part of the Solheim Cup event (which is due to take place at: Chesfield Downs on 3rd September 2021). The way time is flying that will be very soon!

Coronation Foursomes: Congratulations go to Amanda M and Ann K who came in with an amazing 42 points, they are now eligible for a place in the Regional Final, to be held in Cambridgeshire, fingers crossed they get through. Well done ladies.

Friendly Match: Our ladies were in action on Saturday at home against Colmworth. Unfortunately it was not to be Chesfield Downs day, the match went 2-1 to Colmworth. Some great games and enjoyable matches in very hot weather! Well played ladies not easy in those conditions.

Charity Day - Remember to invite your golfing friends to our Charity Day on 15th July 2021. Thank you to those of you that have signed up to help. We are now looking for donations for our: Tombola (bottles), raffle, home made items and good second hand golf clothing. At present we have no security for the ladies locker rooms so until this is rectified please leave your donations with one of the committee members. Sign up sheets for the big day will go up during the week and will be displayed on the notice board opposite the ladies changing room.

Megan Bonner Par 3 Championship: As this competition will be on the Par 3 course on 17th June, there will be a sign up sheet on the notice board for entry.

General Information

First Aid: We still have spaces for the first aid course on the Thursday 24th June after golf (approximately 3pm). The cost of the session is £5.00 pp which covers the cost of the trainer. If you wish to attend please sign up on the poster, on the notice board (opposite the ladies locker room). Payment to Chesfield Downs Ladies Section: CDLS 40-28-14 81769642

What a change a week can make, glorious sunshine was enjoyed by all on Thursday in the Ping Pairs Betterball/Margaret Gentle Vase. Mixed Ping Pairs

Saturday saw the first ever Mixed Ping Pairs competition. Fantastic to see so many pairs out there (22 to be precise) competing for a place at the National Finals to be held at Thonock Park, Lincolnshire on September 7th. Some very impressive scores on the day. Congratulations go to Kathy and John D coming in with 44 points. Will it be enough to qualify? Fingers crossed it is. Well done guys!

Scratch Team Report By; Team Captain Jackie Reid

Sunshine, rain and thunder greeted us on this Spring day for our return match away at Harpenden Common. A lovely warm welcome by all and a very interesting course more than made up for the weather. Unfortunately the result was the reverse of our 4-1 home win. Well done to Linda on halving her match in only her second scratch appearance. Her outstanding performance in competitions recently secured her place today. Lovely scones, jam & cream followed by a fruit platter was enjoyed by all. Something that must be quite unique greeted us on the third hole - a cricket pitch ! Yes, a cricket pitch. Every other Sunday at 2pm the sound of leather on willow can be heard. The hole reverts to a par 3 and if you do happen to land on the wicket you do get a free drop!

Friendly Team

Saturday 5th June see our Friendly Team in action at home. Chesfield Downs v Colmworth. Good luck ladies.

The Creek: Otherwise known as the 'Ditch' - The integrity of the ditch and the challenges it brings to playing our course are important. However, there are many members (and guests) who walk with their trolleys through the ditch and are subsequently eroding the banks and destroying the ditch itself. This is particularly evident on the 10th (by the dry pond) and the 14th! Please ONLY use the bridges to cross.

Sunshine: Looks like a few weeks of sunshine ahead. Although this is very welcomed please remember to bring your suncream/fluids/hat when you play. To avoid dehydration don't forget to prepare for your round by taking on plenty of fluids the day before you play and enjoy the good weather. Looking forward to a sunny week!

See you on the course!

Scratch Match (Team Captains report Jacky R)

Chesfield Ladies scratch team played their second match of the season on Sunday away at Knebworth. The weather was kind, warm with a slight breeze. Congratulations to Annette who made her debut and received her boot bag.

The Friendly Team were at Mount Pleasant on Friday, although all matches were very close, it was not to be Chesfield ladies day and Mount Pleasant took the match 4 - 1. Well played ladies.

Captain's Newsletter - 18 April 2021

It's good to be back playing competitive golf again. Some amazing scores and big handicap cuts this week, well done ladies!

Maria Moore Millennium Bowl

Winners - Linda B & Pat W, Runners up: Debbie Foley & Mandy Unger

Price Vase

Winner - Paula Moore coming in with an amazing 43 points
Runner up - Nicola Adkins, 42 points

Congratulations also go Linda A who chipped in from off the green on the 6th to score a fabulous Par!

Upcoming Competitions

  • Thursday 22nd April - O'Sullivan Cup Team Alliance, 85% of Course HDC (to calculate 85% - COURSE HDC x 85%)
  • First Friendly Match of the season Friday 23rd April, Chesfield Downs v Pavenham Park at home, good luck ladies!
  • Sunday 25th April -  Ann Warner/Maureen Eastwood Trophy Qualifier (Alternative Day)

World Handicap System

Can I remind ladies to check their HDC before playing as we get used to the new system. Handicaps are recalculated every night even if the competition has not been closed, therefore it seems handicaps are changing rapidly.

Score Cards

Since we have had such a long break, and are now facing many changes with the WHS it seems a few of us (including me) are not filling in our score cards correctly. Therefore, to ensure you do not get a DQ please follow these instructions. All sections of card must be filled in with:
  • The competition & date
  • Tee time
  • Course Handicap, Handicap Index, Playing Handicap (all 3 must be on card) for marker and golfer
  • Golfer goes in A
  • Marker goes in D
  • Score must be written in the box at the bottom of the card
Writing on card should be legible.

Upload the card when prompted (not beforehand) making sure the whole card is visible
When you upload the card you are prompted for a name, that will be the person you are marking for (A)

Jacky has kindly filled out the ideal scorecard. Please click on the link below to view it.

Your co-operation will be gratefully appreciated.

Enjoy your golfing week!

Captain's Newsletter - 11 April 2021

A cold but nice golfing week. We went from sunshine to snow in a day! It looks like the weather was kinder today for those playing in the ‘Price Vase alternative Day’. Good luck ladies. Well done to Jacqui H who came 4th in the 'Mixed Roger Burman Warm up Trophy' on Saturday, with an amazing 37 points. Well done Jacqui.

We had our first competition of the season on Thursday, battling through the wind and cold. Unfortunately, a problem with IG stopped us posting the results. As clubs come out of hibernation, there have been lots of requests/queries come through to the IG support team, therefore, the results will be available as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Tuesday 13th April sees our first Captains Shuffle. The Kay Baker Memorial Bowl. To find out your 9 hole COURSE handicap for this competition go to:
  1. IG App on your phone
  2. Select handicap record (flag on right)
  3. Calculator at top right hand side of screen
  4. Scroll down to Chesfield Downs front nine (red)
  5. Select COURSE Handicap

Those of you who wish to carry on to do 18 holes, please remember to WhatsApp your 9 hole score card to Hazel.

General Information

It is with sadness that I have to say Joan W is hanging up her golf shoes. We will miss you Joan, but hopefully once restrictions are lifted we will see you at the club for coffee and joining us for lunch at a few of our functions throughout the year.

Kathy C, Lin G and myself met with Craig Kearney - Golf Operations Manager on Thursday. Craig has recently joined the team at Chesfield Downs. Craig has a vast amount of experience and will be an asset to the club. We look forward to working with him.

The minutes from the ladies' section committee meeting held on March 25th via Zoom are now available to read on the ladies website. To view the minutes go to the website below and click on the tab 'About Us' (minutes are also, available via IG). https://www.chesfielddownsladies.co.uk/

IG Scoring-New Features

I have been asked to remind ladies of the difference between NR and NS.

No Return (NR)
  • Basically the same as pre WHS
  • Add this if you pick up when you have played too many shots to gain a stableford score or medal (5 over par)
  • You will then receive the equivalent of a double nett bogey on that hole

Not Started (NS)
  • NS is a new feature on IG
  • When you have completed 10 or more holes a round can still be eligible for handicapping purposes
  • If you only manage to play 10 or more holes and are unable to complete your round due to the following reasons; Course closed due to adverse weather, bad light, holes no longer in play, you can still submit your round by marking those holes not played with NS.

NS should only be used when you have been unable to start a hole or complete your round for the above reasons. When you put this on your score sheet, and depending on when your round was stopped, IG will automatically calculate your final score. If you decide to come off the course for any other particular reason, you should enter NR, you will then automatically be given a double nett bogey for any holes you have not played.

See you on the course.

Captain's Newsletter - 3 April 2021

Happy Easter!

Hope you have all had lots of chocolate! Well its been a great golf week. It was amazing to see all the ladies in their bright colours on such a beautiful sunny Tuesday last week. Chesfield Downs looked in fantastic condition, many thanks to Lee and his team for all their hard work.

Caroline really enjoyed her special birthday!
(how come I wasn't in that group?).

Finally we get to start our playing season

We will see the return of competitive golf on Thursday 8th April with the Maria Moore Millennium Pairs Betterball.

Our first Stableford qualifier the 'Price Vase' Alternative day is on Sunday 11th April. We will be playing off our new World Handicap System (playing handicap 95%). Main day for this event is on Thursday 15th April. Remember to sign in on IG, 7 days prior to playing.

Tuesday 13th April we have the Kay Baker 9 hole Memorial Bowl. If you have not put your name down for the 'Captains shuffle' and want to play in this event please email me asap. Following your round;
  • Photograph your score card
  • WhatsApp it to Hazel
  • No need to sign cards, just agree your score with your playing partners
  • We are playing off the COURSE handicap (for 9 holes half your course hdc and round up)

Good luck and enjoy this very special competition in memory of our much loved Kay. Kay’s brother Kevin will announce the winner at a presentation later in the year, date TBC.

Tuesday Captain Shuffles

Captains shuffles will be every Tuesday until block bookings are reinstated. I will send out an email each week, if you would like to play please reply by return with just a yes/no. Your rapid response is appreciated and makes organising the shuffle very straight forward. The player who's name is in the first slot is responsible to book the tee time for the four players.

See you on the course.

County Golf Cards Go Digital

From 2021 onwards the County Card can now only be obtained via the igcounty app.
The app offers a host of other features, including news, upcoming and past competitions, contact details and County contact details. The card holder is entitled to:
Receive reduced green fees at host participating clubs (the usual reduction is to the Members Guest Rate and in some cases lower than that price)
The scheme is not just restricted for use within Hertfordshire

To download the app go to;

https://www.hertfordshiregolf.org/download_the_app and follow instructions.

Scoring on IG

If like me you suddenly start to think, I can’t remember how to score, what is my new handicap. Please do not worry, there is always someone to help. Its been a long time since we last used the IG App for scoring, and it will take us all a little while to get back in the saddle. If you have any problems just make sure you fill in your scorecard and photograph it. We can go over the card and provide one to one support. It's a learning curve for us all. IG have supplied us with a very useful updated igMember WHS Scoring Instructional Video. To view it go to:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FxOAlNRTus

On another note I am also aware I have a lovely parking space which will be great. However, the pressure is on to always have a clean car! I have therefore allocated this highly important task to Mr H, so if you notice he is not pulling his weight, please take your complaint directly to him.

Can’t wait to see you out on the course this week!

Kind regards
Pauline Humphrey
