Captain's Newsletter - 30 July 2018

I seem to have started most of my newsletters this year with some sort of weather report but I am not sure what to put this week except that summer just keeps going although that is perhaps stating the obvious!! Anyway....

A lot of golf has been played this week both home and away and all the courses are baked to a cinder. For many of us the ball just keeps on rolling and bouncing into all sorts of places but overall I think we would rather play summer golf than winter golf!

Last weekend the Dennis Flynn Trophy was played. This is a mixed stableford competition and around 60 players took part. Congrats to Pat Ward who finished 4th overall with a very good 38 points and a handicap cut.

Also last weekend James Wilson, the Juniors Captain had his charity day. A fantastic result for James, raising over £5000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

The Scratch team had their final match of the season on Monday, away at Berkhamsted. Margaret, Jill and Linda made their debuts for the team. The course is unusual in that it doesn't have any bunkers. That you might say is an advantage – however there are so many other hazards, gorse, trees, hedges that home advantage showed through and the team was beaten. Well done to all though who played that match and indeed to all the team who have represented Chesfield this year in the Scratch matches. We are currently in top spot in our division but there are a number of other teams with matches still to play. However as leaders in the clubhouse with the points on the board perhaps the pressure will get to the other teams. Thanks to Kathy D for running the team and organising the practice rounds etc this season. Great job skip!

Margaret and Pauline represented Chesfield in the Australian Spoons regional final at Hanbury Manor this week. The course was tricky (and very hot – obviously!!) but they had a creditable mid table final placing at the end.

On Thursday, alongside our monthly Stableford those ladies who played for the Pearson Team this year were eligible to win the Pearson Trophy. The competition saw a number of very good scores and Vice Captain Margaret won the Pearson Trophy and Div 1, with 42 points, getting a nice handicap cut. Div 2 was won by Caroline Roadnight, again with a massive 42 points and a handicap cut to 28, great to see again one of our newer members getting to grips with the course. Well done Caroline!

Next week sees our Away Day to the Bedford. This competition is a fun competition and consequently a pair playing on their own can mark their own card and are eligible to win. Arrive early for bacon butties and putting competition....lunch and prize presentation will happen when we have all finished. Please ensure you have paid your final £30 via the usual means prior to the day.

Captains Tip of the week in this hot weather – wrap a wet towel around an ice block in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight. Take it to golf course in an insulated bag or alongside your frozen water bottles and it will slowly defrost allowing you a cool towel for your head and neck (or anywhere else you fancy using it!)
