Captain's Newsletter - 30 July 2018

I seem to have started most of my newsletters this year with some sort of weather report but I am not sure what to put this week except that summer just keeps going although that is perhaps stating the obvious!! Anyway....

A lot of golf has been played this week both home and away and all the courses are baked to a cinder. For many of us the ball just keeps on rolling and bouncing into all sorts of places but overall I think we would rather play summer golf than winter golf!

Last weekend the Dennis Flynn Trophy was played. This is a mixed stableford competition and around 60 players took part. Congrats to Pat Ward who finished 4th overall with a very good 38 points and a handicap cut.

Also last weekend James Wilson, the Juniors Captain had his charity day. A fantastic result for James, raising over £5000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

The Scratch team had their final match of the season on Monday, away at Berkhamsted. Margaret, Jill and Linda made their debuts for the team. The course is unusual in that it doesn't have any bunkers. That you might say is an advantage – however there are so many other hazards, gorse, trees, hedges that home advantage showed through and the team was beaten. Well done to all though who played that match and indeed to all the team who have represented Chesfield this year in the Scratch matches. We are currently in top spot in our division but there are a number of other teams with matches still to play. However as leaders in the clubhouse with the points on the board perhaps the pressure will get to the other teams. Thanks to Kathy D for running the team and organising the practice rounds etc this season. Great job skip!

Margaret and Pauline represented Chesfield in the Australian Spoons regional final at Hanbury Manor this week. The course was tricky (and very hot – obviously!!) but they had a creditable mid table final placing at the end.

On Thursday, alongside our monthly Stableford those ladies who played for the Pearson Team this year were eligible to win the Pearson Trophy. The competition saw a number of very good scores and Vice Captain Margaret won the Pearson Trophy and Div 1, with 42 points, getting a nice handicap cut. Div 2 was won by Caroline Roadnight, again with a massive 42 points and a handicap cut to 28, great to see again one of our newer members getting to grips with the course. Well done Caroline!

Next week sees our Away Day to the Bedford. This competition is a fun competition and consequently a pair playing on their own can mark their own card and are eligible to win. Arrive early for bacon butties and putting competition....lunch and prize presentation will happen when we have all finished. Please ensure you have paid your final £30 via the usual means prior to the day.

Captains Tip of the week in this hot weather – wrap a wet towel around an ice block in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight. Take it to golf course in an insulated bag or alongside your frozen water bottles and it will slowly defrost allowing you a cool towel for your head and neck (or anywhere else you fancy using it!)

Captain's Newsletter - 23 July 2018

Hopefully you have all enjoyed another sun filled week of golf although football didn't come home! The Open golf is continuing at Carnoustie as I write this so let's hope there is an exciting finish there.

The Friendly team played their latest match against Heydon Grange at Home. It was a great game with five pairs playing. The result was an honourable draw and there were so many good comments from Heydon ladies about our course/club. I think those ladies now know why Helen moved to play at Chesfield. Big thanks to all who play for the Friendly team and give our club and our course a great name!

The tee times for the Away Day to the Bedford have been emailed out but are also on the board in the changing room. I will post any last minute changes in next weeks newsletter so keep your eyes peeled! Even if you have a later tee time come early for bacon butties and join in the putting comp - there will be prizes to win!!! If anyone still needs a lift please speak to a me or any of the Committee and we will sort!

Congratulations to Angela H and Caroline R who won the Palmer Betterball Cup last Thursday. Looks as though it was all quite close with some excellent scores. Well done all!

Good luck to the Scratch team in their final match of the season v Berkhamsted away. The course was a little bit like Carnoustie (parched!!) and without the bunkers when we played it last week!

Happy golfing one and all!

Captain's Newsletter - 16 July 2018

Well, its been another busy golfing week for us all and still the sun shines. The courses are beginning to look a little like a desert, but the ball does roll!

Thursday’s monthly medal was won by Hazel who again had a stonking round with a nett 65 and now plays off 16! Although yours truly also carded a nett 65, Hazel won on a card play off... Congratulations too to Caroline R who had a brilliant nett 69 and now plays off 31. Well done all and a big thanks again to our greenkeeping staff who have kept the greens to a very high standard allowing us to shoot low scores. No doubt we will all be moaning in the winter when we can’t play off our new lower handicaps!!!

Please settle your balance of £30 with Pat for the Away Day on August 2nd if you haven’t already done so. Margaret has arranged a great day and I am really looking forward to it. We will be finalising the draw this week so will let you know all details in due course.

For those not aware we play a 4 round Summer Eclectic in August each year on a Tuesday. In order to simplify the admin of this competition the sign up and sign in will be via HDID. If you signed up on the board for the first round on 31 July, then you will have been transferred to the system this week. Please therefore check your tee times for 31 July on line and then the next rounds will appear on HDID as normal. Any queries please contact Lin Goodey.

The Scratch Team played away at Brickendon Grange on Friday in their penultimate match of the season. Unfortunately the girls from Brickendon took revenge on their defeat at Chesfield last week and beat us 4-1. Well played to all the team and our last match is away at Berkhamsted on Mon 23rd July.

The weekend Stableford was won by Karen Morton with 38 pts who again had a handicap cut. Well done Karen.

I am sorry that I will not be around to play for the Lorraine Palmer Cup on Thursday this week but hope you all have a great day and play nicely with your partners!

Long may the sun continue to shine (but some rain at night might be useful!). Have a good week.

Captain's Newsletter - 9 July 2018

Big week this week so forgive a slightly lengthy update!

Round 2 of the Club Champs on Thursday was played under beautiful blue skies with high temps again. With the course further drying out on an hourly basis it was tight at the top but I am delighted to announce that Karen Morton won the Angela Chatterton Handicap Trophy with a magnificent nett 63 and a handicap cut of 4 shots, and Virginia Chan once again took top spot in the gross competition shooting a gross 76 (yes, gross 76!) Big congratulations to you both and to everyone who took part this year. There have been some big handicap cuts this year so far so let's keep it going....

Thanks go again to Barry and his team for providing us all with a wonderful fizzy afternoon tea, organising the warm up balls on the range and keeping us topped up with water on the course! It was again a fab day....what a great bunch we are!!

Many congratulations too to Caroline Kaswaurere who shot a nett 62 last weekend in the Weekend Medal and had a handicap cut of 4 stokes to get down to 23....what a round!

The Friendly Team played an away match at Mowsbury on Tuesday. Unfortunately we suffered a whitewash (very unlike Chesfield!)but no excuses the Ladies used their home advantage to full effect! Thanks to all who played on the day and the next Friendly is home to Heydon Grange on Wednesday this week.

The Scratch team played a home match v Brickendon Grange on Friday and had a fantastic and hard fought 4-1 win! Very well done girls, keeps us in with a chance of the playoffs! We have a return match away at Brickendon next Friday 13th.

Although the winter seems a long way away now the results of the Pearson Trophy are as follows. Even though we didn't make the final Megan and her squad represented us with pride and tenacity in a very tough season. Well done all and roll on the next one...!

Semi-Finals
Berkhamsted v Brocket Hall
Hadley Wood v East Herts

Final: Berkhamsted v East Herts

Winner: Berkhamsted

The Junior Captain James Wilson is holding his Charity Day on Sat 21st July in aid of Prostate Cancer. The Sign up sheet is on the club notice board if you wish to play but he also has lots of raffle prizes as well so perhaps a chance to make a donation to help out the boys in our lives who could be affected by this horrible disease. If you want any more info please let me know.

I have just finished writing this as England defeat Sweden to reach the semi finals of the World Cup - fantastic news for all involved and for us as fans! Perhaps football really is coming home...!!

Have a great week, keep enjoying the sunshine, the golf, the footie, the tennis and everything else you do...

Captain's Newsletter - 2 July 2018

Another lovely week for golfing although we can't tell how far the balls will now run or indeed which direction they will bounce in!! Gives us all a chance to look at other parts of the golf course!

The weekend Ladies played a fun comp whilst those of us interested watched England play Panama - us youngsters can't remember England ever scoring that many goals!

Round 4 of the summer Stableford League was played on Tuesday, up to date results will be posted on the notice board. Two more rounds to go.....

The Friendly Team played an away match v Mount Pleasant on Wednesday with Karen Morton making her debut for the team. The match as always against the lovely ladies at MP was played in lovely conditions and Chesfield recorded an away win 2.5 to 1.5. Well done everyone and next up is another away match at Mowsbury on Tuesday.

If you are free to play in the Friendly on July 11th (Home to Heydon Grange) please let Helen Leigh know.

Thursday saw round 1 of the Club Championship. It was great to see a large field taking part this year. The results so far are now on HDID. The draw for tee times will be made on Monday and will then be on the system as last week. The players currently leading will be last out so get a lie in that day!!! Well done to all who are competing in this, and please come and join in for the presentation after round 2 with scones and tea (in the conservatory).

Please ensure that when signing in on the HDID system you sign in to the correct competition on the day as several competitions may appear on there at the same time. Once you have finished playing and signed your card please make sure it is placed in the white box on the wall in the Ladies changing room.

Margaret has emailed you all with regards to our Away Day to the Bedford at the beginning of August. Please pay the outstanding balance (£30) to Pat via the usual means marking your payment ‘Away Day’. It’s going to be a fun day!

Looks like the brollys will be out again this week - for the sun that is and take a cool towel too (wrapped around an ice pack works really well!) 😎

Good luck in Round 2 of the Club Champs and happy golfing one and all wherever you may be
