Captain's Newsletter - 25 June 2018

Summer is in full swing now and so is the golf.....

Following on from Charity Day week it seemed a little quieter for me this week.

The weekend Ladies played round 3 of their eclectic, difficult to see who is going to be the winner but a couple more chances to better your scores over the next couple of months. It is great to see so many ladies playing at the weekends.

We played Roll the Dice on Tuesday - a sort of scramble with a difference. It was highly amusing and a scramble always gives you several chances at the par or birdie!

The midweek ladies played their monthly Stableford on Thursday. Now that summer has arrived the CSS keeps going down so not the big handicap cuts we all feel we deserve but still lovely to play in such good conditions....well done to Hazel and Julie R who won the respective divisions with 40 points each and had handicap cuts!

After Thursday's comp I was delighted to be able to present Nicola Adkins with the Handicap Cup which she won in the far distant winter! Really well done Nicola - it was a tough season for match Play!

The Friendly team had a match away at John O Gaunt. Barbara Job made her debut for the team and the greens were running very fast on the Cartagena course. Unfortunately home advantage took over and Chesfield were unable to pull out a win but a good experience for all. We are playing at Mount Pleasant this coming week so another chance to get back on the horse and score a win!

Congratulations go to Pat Ward and Kathy Morris who are going through to the Area Final of the Coronation Foursomes to be held in July and August. The Grand Final should they progress further is held at St Andrews in September. Good luck ladies.

The Aussie Spoons competition has now finished and your Vice Captain Margaret and Pauline Humphrey will be representing Chesfield in the Regional finals at Hanbury Manor in July. Again good luck ladies.

It was great to see Pauline Harrison during her European Tour! Thanks to Kathy C for hosting a great party and I hope you were able to catch up with Pauline at the club last Thursday. Hope to see you again soon Pauline, with clubs in hand!

This week is round 1 of the Club Champs. Keep your eye on HDID as your tee times will be available from Monday evening with the lowest handicappers going out first, as is traditional in this competition. There will be warm up balls available on the range that morning and the following week for Round 2. After Round 2 on Thursday 5th July the Champions will be crowned over a cream tea in the Conservatory so please try and stay afterwards that day, even if you haven’t won!!! Good luck everyone..

Jackie Reid is looking at arranging a trip to Les Miserables at Milton Keynes next year. Due to the popularity of the tickets please could you let Jackie know if you are interested by June 30th this year!

Stay hydrated this week and take your brolly for the sun! Enjoy...😎

Wow, what a day we had on Thursday! I was overwhelmed by the generosity of all of you wonderful ladies and I have received great feedback from the Charity guys as to how much they enjoyed it too. The lads on the helicopter I think you will agree were fantastic and actually getting them there really made the day. Watching them disappear over the club left me feeling quite emotional...the poor guys got a call on their way back but at least they had been fed and watered!

A big thanks too to all the staff and management at the club, they helped make the whole day feel like a big family party and the atmosphere was terrific. Although I don't have all the figures in it looks as though we raised in the region of £3000 on the day. There are so many photos doing the rounds that it is difficult to choose one to sum up our day....if you have any photos please could you whatsapp or email them to me.

The Scratch team match against West Herts at home on Friday was played in fabulous sunshine. We fielded a very strong team for our return match and I am delighted that we won the match 3 : 2. Well done Virginia, Pat Ward and Sally for winning your matches to give us the win for the team. So far this season, we have WON 2, HALVED 2, LOST 1.  Our final three matches in July – Could this be our year for promotion? Come on Chesfield !!!

The weather looks fab for golf and we have a Friendly match v John O Gaunt this week. Good luck to the team. It's a great course!

This week also sees us playing our Monthly stableford which is also the Race to Turnberry. Score high and we could be in the running to play at Turnberry in October. Further details are on the board.

Tee times have been issued to those playing for the Captains Shuffle on Tuesday and Kathy Morris is closing up the Aussie Spoons competition this week and submitting our winners.

Jo Oliver will be running a squad clinic on Tuesday 3rd July, please sign up on the list in the changing room. Jo is also running her regular Mon/Wed clinics through the summer. Keep your eyes on the board for details.

Happy golfing one and all, and thanks again for a memorable day on Thursday.

It's been a busy week since my return from camping! No sooner had I packed away my sleeping bag and I was off with the other 31 of you to the lovely Belton Woods. We were blessed with 2 dry days, 2 wonderful courses, and I think all agreed that the facilities and service were excellent. We learnt a lot about each other over a few glasses of wine, thanks to Nikki B and managed to collectively lose 106 balls, yes 106 balls over the 18 hole Lakes Course on Tuesday!! Thanks to Katy and Lin for organising a fantastic weekend. Please consider doing the task next year....there are lots of great venues to choose from and deals to be had. Katy or Lin will be happy to give you any advice....!

Charity Day is on Thursday this week. A huge thanks to all who have already donated and all the help in organising the event. There are now 5 vouchers for fourballs at local clubs up for auction on the board in the changing room so get together with your pals and get a bid on the sheet! Registration and raffles on Thursday will be ready from 8.30 and tea and coffee will be available in the bar. We are hoping that the Air Ambulance will land on the range at around 1.30pm that day (operational issues depending) so keep your eyes peeled.

We played our midweek monthly medal on Thursday - congratulations to Vicky and Anne, the winners in each division and another new member, Karen Morton won the Ladies weekend stableford. Well done! The handicaps are falling though probably not as much as hoped....!

The Scratch team had a match v Verulam very early on Sunday. As the sun came out there was some great golf played, the course was in fab condition and it is always good to renew friendships! At the end of it 3 matches didn't finish until the 18th hole and we gained a very respectable draw overall away from home. Well done all. Verulam have a Ladies Open on Thursday 5th July and a Ladies Open Invitation Day on Saturday 18th August. This could be a chance for our weekend ladies to enter an Open. Details and entry forms will be on the board at the rear of the changing room in the week.

Pauline Harrison will be visiting us soon from NZ and staying at Kathy Carroll's house. Kathy C is willing to host a Bring a dish/Pot Luck supper at her house on Wednesday 20th June 7pm onwards.

If you would like to come please email Kathy and let her know which dish you would bring. We would need:-
Nibbles
Starters
Main Courses
Desserts

Kathy will provide wine and soft drinks.

Please let Kathy know by Sunday 17th June if you are coming and which dish you are bringing. If there are too many of one course you may be asked to change. First replies get priority! Should be a great night and will be good to catch up with Pauline.

Looking forward to seeing lots of you on Thursday and offering a warm welcome to all our guests. Don't forget if you can't play please come and buy some raffle tickets, have a coffee and maybe spot the Air Ambulance!

Enjoy the sunshine!

Back from spending a golf free week under canvas in Cornwall. I can recommend it! Sunshine, cream teas, glorious views and good company!

The Scratch team won their latest match v Berkhamsted, well done to all who played.

The Friendly Team played at home against Mill Green and got an honourable draw. Caroline Roadknight played her first game for the team so well done to her and all who played.

I think Tuesdays game was a bit of a wash out but on Thursday the Coronation Foursomes Qualifier was played. I think that Hazel and Anne will be the pair to progress to the next round. Great performance girls! It is the first time we have entered this competition.

A large number of us are off to Belton Woods on Sunday for the Ladies Away weekend. Hoping that the sun will shine this year and a big thanks to Lin and Katy for organising again this year. I am really looking forward to it!

The tee times for Charity Day will be out this week. Plans are coming together for hopefully a great day on June 14th. In the meantime, Medal this Thursday - i will again put some balls on the range for an early warm up!

Have a great week!
