Captain's Newsletter - 30 Apr 2018

Yet again as I write this the course is closed due to 19mm of rain overnight! Hopefully by the time you read this things will have improved....

Big Happy Birthday to Megan for Monday 30th April!!!! Hope your celebrations 🎉 were fun with the family!

It's been a very busy week for matches, the Pearson team have played twice this week, against Welwyn Garden City and Porters Park. Unfortunately they weren't able to win but there were some close matches. Congrats to Hazel, Margaret, Julie R and Kathy C who all won their games during the week. They have one more match to play v Sandy Lodge on Tuesday to complete the season.

The Scratch team also played and gained a creditable half v Veralum, obviously during the summer as the photo shows! By the time you read this they will have played their next match away at West Herts.

Scratch Team v Veralum

The Friendly team kicked off their season with a match v Pavenham, Maggie and Anne made their debuts and Chesfield lost by a small margin. Well done girls. The return match has already been booked for next year. Helen and Kathy M are captaining the team this year and need an extra couple of Ladies for the next home match on Sat May 12th v Colmworth. Open to all...please contact them if you would like to play.

The draw for Spring Meeting (Thursday 10th May) will be done this week and tee times posted for you all on Thursday on the board. There is still time to add your name in or sign up for lunch only. Prizes and cups and trophies we have already played for this season will be presented after lunch on the day. Get the sun dances going!!

Charity Day is racing towards us so do invite any friends you might wish to play with that day. I have a sheet with all the info on if you want to send it to anyone let me know...🚁🚁

Please please send us some warm weather and sunshine!! Happy golfing x

Sun sun sun......😎 didn't really think I would be saying that this time last week but at last we have enjoyed a great week of weather and hopefully we can now get on with all our matches, cups, trophies, qualifiers etc etc....⛳️🏆

The Pearson Team played away at Porters Park on Monday, congratulations to Nikki and Kathy M who secured wins but unfortunately Porters Park ran out 5-2 winners. The team have 2 more matches in quick succession this week, away at WGC on Monday and then a rescheduled match home against Porters Park on Wednesday. Good luck to all.

The Scratch Team played their first match of the season on Friday at home to Veralum. The course was now in great condition and in very hard fought matches the overall result was a halved match! Well done to Vicky who made her debut for the team and won her match!

The Australian Spoons competition took place on Tuesday in windy conditions. The top pair after the qualifying round with 36 points is Hazel and Anne. Don't forget you can play as many times as you like between now and the closing date in June AND you can change your partner if the first one was rubbish!!! 🤪 there is a sheet up on the board with further details but any queries please contact Kathy Morris or Pauline Humphrey. You might qualify for the next round at Hanbury Manor but I think you will need more than 36 points! Good luck.

The week culminated in the Jubilee Jug, held on the hottest April day for 70 years...! It was a fantastic day and thanks to all who got into the spirit with some great outfits (some not designed for the heat!) and gave generously to the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. it looks like we raised in the region of £300 and had a lovely afternoon tea too.

There were some great scores posted and congratulations go to Hazel and Katy who won the trophy with 46 points 🏆 the other places on the rostrum went to the Julies - Price and Retallick, and Barbara and Vicky both with 43 points.

Jubilee Jug winners - Katy Cook & Hazel Brunnen

The judging for the Best Dressed pair was really difficult but Chris and Di took the fizz on this ocassion. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. There are lots of pics to view on Club Facebook page.

Best Dressed winners - Di Chapman & Chris Skeen

Life moves on a pace now and the sign up sheet is now on the board for the Spring Meeting on May 10th. We will draw the 4 balls for this a week before and it will be a Team Alliance format followed by lunch and Prize giving of the trophies and Cups so far this year. Cost is £18 - payment to Pat via the usual methods. If any of you wish to just join in for lunch and prize giving please also sign up and the cost is £16. There will also be a raffle and prizes for the golf on the day.

Have a great week and happy golfing...⛳️

Pearson Team at Brocket Hall

So, we set out on a another week of Springtime!

On Saturday the course had dried out enough for all to take part in the Captains Drive In. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day with excellent grub after and a fair amount of banter! Everyone put a tee in the ground where they thought the Captains Drives would land....how wrong most of them were! Should have known better than to put them in the fairway!

On Monday the Pearson team took on Brocket Hall at their place. The rain just kept on coming and Brocket came out the winners 5 - 2. Congratulations for giving it a really good shot girls, the conditions were appalling...although I gather the tea afterwards was worth playing for....!🍰

It was not a great day for playing matches and as the greens flooded at Chesfield in the afternoon, Virginia and yours truly took on Aldwickbury Park in a scratch foursomes match in the Powell Cup. Unfortunately we were soundly beaten....but there’s always next year!

The rest of the week was not that good for golfing either, the course being completely closed on Tuesday and then, fog on Thursday coupled with the earlier waterlogging lead to the cancellation of the April midweek Stableford!

However at the end of another miserable week the weather fairies tell me that next week really will be better. We have the rearranged Australian Spoons on Tuesday and the Jubilee Jug on Thursday so get your shorts and your fake tan out! Don’t forget there will be a raffle on Thursday for the Air Ambulance so please bring an extra £1 or 2 with you. Please pay in the usual way for the event - £12 to include afternoon tea.

Just as a footnote to this, Jo Wilson invited the section Captains to play at Woburn on Friday. She kindly offered up a prize for a couple of NTP holes. At the 6th I managed to win the prize but from about 3 feet I managed to 4 putt, much to the amusement of all, especially one young James Wilson!!! I felt the need to mention this before he told everyone in the club!! That’s golf James....but thanks to you and your family for hosting a lovely day.

And on that note, remember, when playing a match, always concede the fourth putt!!😀

Captain's Newsletter - 9 Apr 2018

At last we are out on the course and it is a little warmer and definitely less wet!

On Tuesday a few brave souls played 9 holes and on Thursday we played the rearranged O'Sullivan Cup over 16 holes. The results are not on HDID but will be announced at the Spring Meeting.

Saturday saw the season opener Captains Drive In, featuring all Section Captains and Vice Captains.

The weather stayed dry and a special thank you to all the Ladies who took part. It was a really fun day and the other Captains, Vice Captains, members, and staff helped make it a memorable day for all the new Captains. Congratulations to Linda Brown who was in the winning team!

In case anyone has not collected their new Club sweater they are in the pro shop for payment and collection. At some stage during the season we will have a photo of everyone in their new colours (and even those who don’t have one can be in the pic too!)

I also have the County Cards for 2018 so let me know if you haven’t got one yet (they should be issued with your membership renewal but I have some spares...)

The tee times for the Jubilee Jug will be published this week and if you would just like to come and join us after the golf for afternoon tea please sign up on the board. Cost for just tea is £5. The more the merrier and there will be a raffle and Air Ambulance merchandise on sale.

Jackie has organised a Spring Flower workshop at the Club on Wednesday 18th April. There are still places available - cost £30 and you get to keep you creations....! Please contact Jackie direct.

This week is our April Stableford - this month it is in conjunction with England Golf Trust and the winner of each division has a chance to progress to an England Golf National Pairs Final to be held in August at Kings Norton Golf Club.

I have decided that I would like to see the fairways narrowed this season then all of you will have to play from the rough and not just me!!

Have fun and good luck to all those involved in matches this week ️😀

Captain's Newsletter - 2 Apr 2018

It's still raining as I write this....at least some enjoyed an extra pond for a wash!!

However, we managed to play the first round of the ‘Summer’ Stableford on Tuesday. Thanks to Lesley who is administering this competition again this year. The results of Round 1 are on the board.

On Thursday we also managed to stay dry (or I did!!) and play the Maria Moore Millennium Bowl - this is an Australian rules stableford where you multiply the pairs score. With our ‘Sorrys’ said it was good fun and the winners will be announced at the Spring Meeting on May 10th.

The Pearson Team attempted to play their home match against Porters Park last Wednesday but as Kathy C putted through the puddle on the first hole and couldn’t mark her ball as the marker floated away....the match was abandoned!! However, good luck to Hazel and Margaret on Wednesday this week when they go and play at Sandy Lodge to finish the blizzard abandoned match from last month.

The winter KO semis were played this week and the final will be contested between Pat and Virginia - good luck girls and let us know when you are playing this and we will come along and support...

Don’t forget to sign up for the Jubilee Jug with a partner and sort your outfits for April 19th. All these events come around so quickly. There will be a raffle that day and prizes for the best dressed team so...

Sign up is also on the board for the first Friendly of the year versus Pavenham at home on Friday 27th April. A great opportunity for all to play some pairs match play. Kathy M and Helen are your contacts for all the Friendly matches this season.

The Captains Drive in is on for Saturday 7th April - there are a few places still available so even if you are only a 5 day member you have courtesy of the course that day and for a £10 you can have a good laugh at your Captain trying to drive off the first tee as well as all the other Captains! If you aren’t playing then you are welcome to come along and watch the Drive in...

Hope you all had a good Easter weekend. Keep your wellies handy for the week ahead but then Spring is arriving next weekend! I promise....
