Captain's Newsletter - 25 Mar 2018

At last we got out and played a qualifier! Not sure many of us thought it was a great idea but for a few it was...

Huge congratulations to Jill Bransby who shot a hole in one at the 12th during our Stableford competition....and on those greens too! Thanks Jill for donating to my Charity in lieu of drinks in the bar. Enjoy a well earned break in Portugal.

Jill was the worthy winner of Div 1 with Denise Clinch taking the prize in Div 2 with a massive 38 points, and a handicap cut of 2 shots! Great result Ladies in difficult conditions.

Also welcome to Qualifiers to our newest members, Caroline Roadnight and Anne Lawrence and our new (ish) weekend players, Annette Gillett, Annabel Scholes, Clare Breen, Clare Lyndon and Caroline Kaswaurere. I hope I have included you all and the best of luck with the new season, albeit a bit late in getting going. You are always welcome on a Tuesday or a Thursday as well...

The draws were made for both the Singles and Doubles Summer Kos and these will be in black and white on the board this week with the rules of each competition and details of the prelim matches in the singles.

The Jubilee Jug sign up sheet will be on the board this week. This popular event is on Thursday April 19th. Please sign up as a pair this year – hopefully this will encourage you to get some fantastic outfits organised in advance!

Rogie and I went to play in the Ladies Captains and Vice Captains day at Welwyn Garden City last Friday. We enjoyed the golf and had a good lunch afterwards with useful exchange of views with other Hertfordshire club Captains and Vices. We didn't disgrace ourselves but equally didn't win – the winners have to host next year!

Hopefully we have now seen the back of the winter and golf will become much more pleasurable. Andy and his team have done a fantastic job during the winter both with the course and some great projects around the course. We have a course to be proud of, thanks Greenkeepers!! ⛳️

Good luck to the Pearson team in their home match v Sandy Lodge on Wednesday.

Get out and enjoy your golf!

Captain's Newsletter - 18 Mar 2018

Another week dawns and there is snow on the ground as I write this! Let's hope we can get a bit closer to Spring this coming week.

Following last Thursdays washout the O'Sullivan Cup will now be played on Thursday 5th April. Please sign up again on HDID and hopefully we will have a better day for it. We will not now play a medal in April.

Other rearranged comps are as follows and I will put these dates up on the board in the week

Australian Spoons - now on Tuesday April 17th
Price Vase - now on Thursday May 17th

Thanks to Anne Lawrence for entertaining us (!) during the weather breaks this week with her stories from her time with the anti terrorist police.

The Maria Moore Milennium Bowl is a pairs comp on Thursday 29th March. This is not a qualifier and is on a sign up sheet in the changing room.

The Pearson season continues this week with a home match against Porters Park on Wednesday and the 4 ladies involved in the semi finals are still trying to play their matches before the end of the month - I think it is a record this year for the number of postponements. Good luck to all and see you all for our monthly Stableford on Thursday.

There is an up to date handicap list with some further information on handicaps and qualifiers on the board at the rear of the changing room. Please reacquaint yourself with this information as we go into the season proper.

Jo will be recommending her team clinics in the week before Easter so please check the sign up sheets on the board and make use of these excellent sessions. They are great preparation for all our team golf in the coming season.

Remember most golfers prepare for disaster- a good golfer prepares for success!

Social News
Jackie has arranged for Kelly to come and do a spring floral display workshop on Wednesday 18th April 10-12.30am. Cost will be £30 per head and there needs to be a min of 4 people. Please book with Jackie direct.

Some of our ladies took part in the Quiz at the Green Man in Offley on Monday night, hope they won the prizes!

Keep smiling, clean the clubs and get the sunglasses out!

I am not going to mention the 'W' word this week – suffice to say we are all frustrated and still await some springlike 'W'

We managed a 9 hole stableford on Tuesday, this was won by Jean Ray on her return from injury, great result Jean! The RU was Anne Lawrence. Good scores in difficult conditions.

I went with some of the Committee to visit the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance base on Monday. We had a very informative visit, which underlined the incredible work this charity does. They work in traumatic conditions with very sick or injured people, young or old and having seen it all in operation I feel even more now that this is a terrific cause to raise money for, so let's get our hands in our pockets this year. I know how generous we all are in the Ladies Section. As a specific connection to Chesfield our tour leader, base manager and paramedic (Pictured above at the front) was Lou Rosson who is Lorraine Palmer's niece. You should be very proud of her Lorraine.

On the subject of raising money for the charity, the Jubilee Jug will be upon us before we know it and so that you can all prepare in advance for it the theme this year will be 'Let's Fly in Red and Yellow'. There will be a prize for the best dressed pair....

Deposits of £10 are now due for the Away Day in August...... Please pay by the usual means marking it clearly as Away Day deposit.

The O'Sullivan Cup takes place on Thursday this week, this is a team Alliance (best 2 scores to count on each hole) so we will be trying to make up 4 balls wherever possible, giving you all the best possible chance! Good Luck..

Here's hoping we don't have to mention the 'W' word again

Another week of disrupted fixtures at home, but I don't know what all the fuss was about...lovely in Spain!! ⛳️😎 hope you have managed to keep warm.

Not a lot happened on Tuesday but a few hardy souls went and played a few holes...the decision was taken then to cancel the Price Vase and in hindsight it would have cancelled itself anyway!

Please note in your diary that the Price Vase will now be played alongside our May Stableford competition on Thursday May 17th
. Surely by then it will be somewhat warmer!

Our Pearson team played away at Sandy Lodge on Monday 26th.

The weather conditions were not ideal and this resulted in the last 2 matches being abandoned because of blizzards. These matches will be replayed on April 4th. Well done girls for turning out and playing on what was a dreadful day.

The Scratch team start their 2018 campaign against Verulam at home on Saturday 10th March. A little early for what we like to call Summer golf (especially this year!) but good luck to all...

On a more positive note, the sign up sheets will be going up on Monday 5th March for the Summer Knockouts. Full rules for planning your matches will also be on the board. The Ann Grist Trophy is the match play singles KO and the Mary Warmoth is the Pairs KO. Closing date for Entries is Mon 19th March. The draw will be made on Thursday 22nd March.

Finally, to help us improve our performances in Medal rounds this season there will be a supply of warm up balls on the range for each of our monthly Medal competitions through the season. Use wisely!!

And....Birdies start again this week so don't forget to record them in the book.

Wellies out next week.... Roll on Spring! ⛳️🤞
