Captain's Newsletter - 28 Jan 2018

This week has again seen a mixture of winter weather and has meant that the course is still very wet. However being a hardy lot we have got out in the fresh air and played some muddy golf. Some of the fences have now seen better days at the club!

Tuesday's competition was a Stableford Multiplier and was won by Lin Goodey and Mandy Unger. Anne Lawrence and Barbara Baldwin were the Runners up. Congratulations ladies, always a difficult format to get a score!

Conditions were again tricky but the 3rd Round of the Winter Eclectic was played and its getting close at the top of both divisions. Still 3 rounds to go so plenty of time to get that Eclectic score down.

The first trophy competition of the year is the Megan Bonner Par 3 competition on Thursday 22nd February. The sign up sheet for this will be on the board on Thursday this week. It is a shotgun start at 9.30 and will be followed by the prize presentation for the Winter Eclectic.

Stay warm...happy golfing

Captain's Newsletter - 22 Jan 2018

Unfortunately we are in the grips of a nasty spell of winter weather (Captain is stating the obvious!) winter golf is not for everyone but although rather windy a good number of ladies played on both Tuesday and Thursday last week.

Golf Results
Tuesday - Double the Odds
Winner - Pat Ward - 30 points
Runner up Helen Leigh - 28 points

Thursday - Eclectic Rnd 3
Hopefully we all improved from our previous score. The results are not available through HDID but there will be a copy of the Leaderboard in the changing room later in the week so you know what you have to do in the next round!

Upcoming Events
Our first trophy of the year will be the Megan Bonner Par 3 competition played on the Lannocks course on Thursday 22nd February. Entry will be via a sign up sheet on the board at the beginning of February. Prizes for the Winter Eclectic will be awarded following the golf that day with light refreshments and a cuppa in the Conservatory.

There is also a list up on the board for anyone wishing to come to the Coffee Morning at Porters Park Golf Club on Monday 29th January. If you need a lift or are willing to drive please fill in the list. I will take all our raffle tickets and try and ensure that we win some prizes between us all this year!

For those of you anxiously waiting for the diary, the paper copies are now available via reception so pick up your copy this week.

Keep warm and dry...

Captain's Newsletter - 15 Jan 2018

The Ladies Committee had their first meeting of the year. It was decided that in line with the new CONGU handicapping system all our competitions this year will be open to all Ladies with a maximum handicap of 54. This will maintain the inclusive nature of our club and our section and I will keep you informed as to any other details relating to this in due course.

The Committee itself remains as last year with the addition of Pauline Humphrey who joins us as 'member without portfolio' and I know she will be a great asset to Team 18. Although Virginia does not sit on the Committee this year she will continue to carry out the role of IT Advisor/Consultant and manage our website and all things technical.

It was good to get a round of the Winter Eclectic under our belts and even though we needed torches on a dull day I am sure that most of us will have plenty to improve on in the next round. Good luck this week...

The Annual Subs for the Ladies Section are now due. For the new ladies this is a one off annual payment which goes towards administering the Ladies Section and allows you to play in all the competitions run by the Ladies Section. Please pay by the usual methods.

Whilst you have your financial heads on your deposits for the Away Weekend to Belton Woods are now due. Please pay £35 by the usual methods (cheques payable to Chesfield Downs Ladies Section) making your payment clear that it is for this event. Any queries please speak to Lin Goodey or Katy Cook.

Nikki Brooke is undertaking a 'Dry January' in aid of my charity! Thank you so much Nikki, I am sure it is a very difficult challenge. If you would like to donate via her Just Giving page then here is the link. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nikki-brooke

Also, there is a notice up in the changing room regarding donations of unwanted items/clothing etc for my charity - the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. The charity do not have their own bags for these collections but please bring your own and leave in the changing room. I will arrange for them to be collected. It's a great way of raising funds for them. Thank you in advance.

Let's hope we see a bit of sunshine this week - happy golfing

Captain's New Year Newsletter 2018

Happy New Year one and all! Here's to a happy, healthy and successful 2018!

I hope you all enjoyed Christmas with family and friends and didn't over indulge too much. It is now time to get some fresh air and look forward to some winter golf.

In spite of our best efforts it looks as though the Club diary will not be available until the middle of January so the following info should get us all started. If we can get an electronic version any earlier then I will let you know.

The 12 Hole Winter Eclectic begins on Thursday this week, and in spite of several bouts already of seasonal weather, we will endeavour to play 7 rounds in this competition. Sign up is on the system and opens 3 weeks in advance of each round. It is a popular competition so make sure you sign up early. It is a good idea too to check the system a few days before the competition in case anyone has pulled out or if you need to contact your playing partners for any reason.

The Mixed Winter League at the weekends is also on the system - weekend Ladies you know the drill.

I have put up a list of our major events for 2018 on the noticeboard in the changing room. Please add them to your diary and we will fill in the gaps when the whole diary is available.

The Coffee Morning at Porters Park GC will be held on Monday January 29th. Please purchase your raffle tickets from Margaret if you haven't done so already and if you would like to come then we can arrange lifts.

I am really looking forward to being your Captain for 2018. I am certain that we will have some great rounds of golf and some good fun in the coming year.

Happy New Year and happy golfing in 2018
