Last Captain's Newsletter of 2017

It is with a little sadness that I sit here with my sherry and mince pie and begin my final newsletter of 2017

As usual this time of year is hectic for many but lots of you have still found time to play golf. The seasonal weather closed the course for five days

But thanks to our dedicated green keeping team The Christmas Jumper Challenge did go ahead last Friday, 18hole team alliance followed by a lovely Christmas lunch. Ann Lawrence was in the winning team who scored 84 points

Eleven ladies danced the night away at the Glittering Christmas Party

As we look forward to 2018 can I remind you that sign up is now on HDID for the 12 hole winter eclectic.

Also those wishing to purchase a new club jumper in foxglove can try one for size. Please see Marica

Another small sherry as I close by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and A Happy and Healthy New Year

Scratch Team Wins Group!

"After just our third season in the County Scratch League, we have risen to the challenge and WON OUR GROUP FOR 2017.

The Scratch League runs until the end of September, but the results displayed as at 26th August show that Chesfield Scratch Team cannot be beaten.

We will win Group A in Division 4 with a total of 5 matches won out of 8 played. Our closest rivals Brickenden Grange also won 5 matches but only won 20 individual games to our 23.5 individual games- every game counts!

I am absolutely delighted with this result and CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE TEAM who played this season. Virginia Chan, Kathy Dale, Pat Ward , Sarah Faircliff, Sally Weekes, Julie Price, Lauren Pitcher, Emma Wood and Jackie Reid.

And a huge thank you to all the Scratch Team Squad, who have supported the team and been ready and willing to play in matches when required. Vicky Thompson, Maria Mouncher, Jean Ray, Marica Kelland, Chris Newcombe.

The two other groups in Division A have also played enough matches to identify the final results before the season deadline of 30 September and unfortunately we have been beaten to promotion by an exceptionally small margin – just 0.33 points. No final for us this year, but they will be quaking next year.

Whilst this is very disappointing, it will spur us on to win our group next year – AGAIN – and gain promotion to Division 3

Top of the group!!! A brilliant result for our 2017 Scratch Team. Congratulations to you all!!!!!"

- Kathy Dale, Scratch Team Captain

Another busy week for Chesfield Ladies, taking their golf out and about.

De Paula Cup - Kathy Dale played her quarter final match against a West Herts opponent and although recovering from a shoulder injury she did manage to go down the 19th before being beaten.

Ping Pairs Plate Final - Hazel Brunnen & Alison Webber travelled north to Gainsborough in Lincolnshire to compete in this prestigious final. "We were well looked after and received a new golf bag, the weather was off and on and so was our game".

Yonex Lady Pairs Golf Tour - Coming to Hertfordshire for the first time this relatively new golf event for ladies took place at East Herts & Knebworth GC. Margaret Gentle, Pauline Humphrey, Rogie Taylor & Kathy Morris played the two day, two round event.

Again a fun day out on the golf course. Well done to all our ladies who have taken part.

Still time to buy a ticket to be in with a chance to win a 'years free membership'. Please see Captain or Vice. Only £5.

Coaching sessions will recommence on Tuesday 19th September with Jo Oliver. Starting at 3pm and lasting an hour Jo will be concentrating on the short game. Cost £7 per session. Sign up on the board as places are limited.

Scratch Team
Top Of The LeagueFollowing an emphatic 4-1 home win on Sunday against West Herts, Chesfield Downs scratch team are now riding high at the top of group A in Division 4. 5 matches out of the 8 played and 3 victories.

Recently crowned Handicap Club Champion, Lauren Pitcher, continued her excellent run of good form to win her match 6&4. Emma Wood, one of our 7day members, came back to playing after several months off the golf course to take another resounding win over her opponent of 6&4. We had two more good wins of 4&3 for our team and the one game that West Herts won was as close as it gets going all the way to the 18th hole.

Mill Green both away and at home for the next two matches. Well done to all the team Kathy, Emma, Lauren, Pat & Sally.

Friendlies Team
Success breeds success as was demonstrated on Wednesday when the 'friendly ladies' hosted Mowsbury.

As temperatures once again soared bacon butties were on the menu prior to the friendly team taking on a team from Mowsbury. Playing pairs matchplay the ladies returned an magnificent 4-1 victory. You are all winners - congratulations.

De Paula Cup
Kathy Dale had a fabulous win, 6&4, against Elizabeth O'Hare from Welwyn Garden City in this years newly formatted De Paula Cup. Kathy is through to the quarter finals!! Well played.

In previous years this competition has been held over three consecutive days but numbers have declined so HCLGA has changed the format and it is now played over the summer in a knockout format. Get your name down for 2018.

Good luck to Lauren in her round 2 match against Jo Shrimpton Davies from Brookmans Park.

Forthcoming Events
Sign up now for the Palmer Betterball Cup Thursday on HDID.

Wednesday 16th August Palmer Cup. A pairs match play versus the senior men. Sign up sheet on the board. Golf followed by a delicious lunch.

Crowned Club Champion for the 4th year running, Virginia Chan (gross 167). Winning the Angela Chatterton Trophy (lowest nett score), Lauren Pitcher.

Twenty two ladies competed in the second round of the club championships in overcast cooler conditions.
