Scratch Team v Mid Herts (Home)

The first Scratch match of the season was played on Saturday 23rd April at Chesfield. The visitors were from Mid Herts and following bacon butties and coffee the matches were greeted on the first tee by a keen northerly wind and hailstones! So much for summer scratch golf! However, the hardened Chesfield ladies, Virginia, Sarah, Julie, Pat and Lauren played exceptionally well and the home team triumphed by a margin of 3 1/2 points to 1 1/2. Congratulations to all the team on a fantastic start to the season.

Silver Jubilee Jug

The Silver Jubilee Jug was played for this week. A fantastic celebration by the Ladies' Section to commemorate 25 years since the official opening of Chesfield Downs Golf & Country Club.

We presented our Guests of Honour with their engraved gifts to recognise their importance as Founder members of our club - Madeleine Fielder, Lorraine Palmer and Pat Pollendine.

A huge thank you to Jackie Reid for her help with the super decoration of our Conservatory and also to Joel and his team for the anniversary cake – collectively cut by all our previous Ladies' Captains.

Anniversary cake cutting with our past Captains
In 1st place and winners of the Silver Jubilee Jug were Lin Goodey and Hazel Brunnen. We had a tie for 2nd place but on countback from Alison Webber and Di Alford, 2nd place went to Mandy Unger and Marion Dix. Congratulations to our winners.

Winners - Lin Goodey & Hazel Brunnen
To add to the entertainment, I had set everyone a tricky task, by asking them to wear something with a silver theme. Some of our members went to extreme lengths to rise to this challenge.

We had Tin Men, Every Cloud has a Silver Lining, silver Marshals, silver top hats, silver flappers, my own astronaut suit, and two very different versions of Silver Service. Lots of photographs were taken and can be seen on our website.  Click here to see the 2016 Gallery.

A collection was taken for our two Silver Service Waitresses, Hilary and Jenny, which produced 32pence, 3 buttons and 1 euro – don’t spend it all at once !

But the best dressed accolade went to Patti Vincent and Brenda Harrington for their amazing silver service Fork and Spoon outfits. And yes, Patti did drive to the golf club ready dressed, with the top down on her convertible (it was the only way she could fit in it) – causing much hilarity in the rush hour traffic and one driver to call out “There’s a fork in the road!!”

Best Dressed Winners - Brenda Harrington & Patti Vincent

Captain's Drive In 2016

On Saturday 9th April the Captains of all four sections at Chesfield Downs began the official start of the 2016 season with the Captains’ Drive In event.

Unfortunately Ady Barton, our Men’s Captain, was unwell and in hospital, so had to miss this exciting event. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Crown Golf provided bacon baps, tea and coffee and a goody bag for the golfers, who had a shotgun start at 8am.

The competition was followed by a very nice pie and mash while all the spectators watched the four Captains tee off the 1st. The combined yardage of these drives was calculated and a prize for the winning guessed distance went to Brigid Kerr.

Thank You
A huge thank you goes to the volunteers who were at the club before 7am to organise registration of players and also to those who checked the score cards after the competition. Thank you also to Annette Axelsson who worked hard behind the scenes to organise this event for us.

Drive In Results
  • The winning team with the best 2 scores were: Nigel Jones, Mark Alban, Peter Harris and Brian Willcocks with 88 points.
  • Nearest the Pin on the 3rd for the ladies was Brigid Kerr
  • Longest drive on the 8th was a delighted Kathy Dale
Fundraising
Money was raised for all the Captains’ charities.

Jackie Reid sponsored all the Captains and Vice Captains for each birdie achieved on the day. We managed to achieve 3 – although it could so easily have been more!!

“Guess the drive yardage” entry fees plus Jackie Reid’s sponsored Birdie Challenge and a generous donation from Roz Mackenzie totalled a brilliant £100 towards the Ladies' Captain’s Charity, the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth.

A great start to the season!

Two competitions in one this week. Looking good for our upcoming qualifiers.

Thursday
Medal format in April showers saw excellent scores from Megan Bonner with a nett 70 to come in 2nd place but she was beaten by Susanna Chan with a brilliant nett 68 to win Division 2. With the CSS at 73, Susanna has been cut by 2 strokes. A fantastic result!

After their good form on Tuesday, we had a draw for the Winner of Division 1, as both golfers had nett 73 points. On countback, Patti Vincent won 1st place, with Sarah Faircliff coming 2nd.

The 9 hole Stableford competition played the same day was won with a superb 18 points by Pam Blake. Order of Merit points for 9-hole qualifiers will be calculated throughout the season, with the winner announced at the Ladies AGM in November.

Thank You – Patti Vincent gave up chocolate for Lent, saving every penny she would normally have spent in her chocoholic world to raise an amazing £92. GOLF RESULTS
7-Day – Our hardy 7-day golfers set off on Sunday to play our first weekend ladies Stableford qualifier. But storm Katie came early!! Horizontal rain, hailstones and 50mph wind created huge problems with our scores. Winner on countback was Linda Brown, who just pipped Lin Goodey into 2nd place.

Tuesday – No competition this week.

Thursday – This week we played Aussie Rules. A tough format - playing with an understanding friend is essential. Congratulations to the winners of the Maria Moore Millennium Bowl with 60 points – Mary Hooper and Barbara Baldwin. 2nd Di Rogers and Lesley Bonser, 3rd Rogie Taylor and Lauren Pitcher.
