Captain's Newsletter - 26 Mar 2016

SUMMER KNOCKOUTS – The Draw is done - The Ann Grist Trophy and the pairs Mary Warmoth Cup draws are now on the Ladies Notice Board. If you have not yet paid your £2 entry fee please put it in an envelope into the black box in the ladies changing room or pay direct into the ladies section bank account. We are delighted to have so many competitors this year. Check out who you are drawn against and get your matches completed early so that the next rounds can commence as soon as possible to give everyone the maximum time to sort out their dates. Who will triumph as the winner of the Ann Grist Trophy? And which pair will carry off the Mary Warmoth Cup?

Slow Play - If your group has fallen behind the group in front and lost a hole, please call the group behind through so that the rest of the field can keep up the pace.

GOLF RESULTS
7-Day – The Ken Bird Weekend Mixed Winter League – This week 99 golfers played a Stableford Qualifier. The winning score was 39 points with Lesley Bonser scoring 36 points in 14th place. After 15 rounds, Lesley’s points this week gives her a fantastic overall 3rd place in the Order of Merit with a phenomenal 66 points. Congratulations!

Tuesday – The first round of the Stableford League was played on a sunny spring morning. All the scores are on our website. Click on the Hot Link or use the Leaderboard menu. Points are awarded after each round and the Winners this week were: Division 1 Kathy Dale 34pt, Division 2 Hilary Clark 34pt, Division 3 Di Rogers 33pt.  There are another 5 rounds to play to find the overall winners for 2016.

Thursday – The first monthly Stableford competition of 2016 was played today with plenty of birdies achieved. The Winners were: Division 1 Lauren Pitcher 36 points, Division 2 Margaret Fredjohn 37 points

9 Hole Stableford - The winner was Yvonne Wood with 18points. Her birdie on the 9th was a beauty!

Walk The Bridges Of London, Sunday 8th May 2016 - Fundraising for Letchworth Garden House Hospice. Please give your application forms to our organiser, Chris Bryce. We have ten ladies walking so far: Di Alford, Alison Webber, Megan Bonner, Rogie Taylor, Yvonne Wood, Hilary Clark, Angela Hamilton, Di Rogers, Lesley Bonser and Kathy Carroll. They are all raising money, so if you cannot walk, perhaps you can sponsor our brave trekkers.

Chesfield Downs Celebrates our 25th Anniversary - Save the dates

Thursday 14th April – Ladies Section Silver Jubilee Jug – Pairs Betterball. Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 25th Wear something silver or decorate your bag/hat. Then enjoy Afternoon Tea in a silver decorated Conservatory. (If you cannot play golf that day, please join us for Tea)

Friday 27th May – Chesfield celebrates with a Golf Day Event and a chance to say “goodbye” to Ed O’Hanlan, our head greenkeeper who leaves that day

Friday 15th July – A Celebration evening dinner and live band is planned. If you have any stories/memorabilia/photos – old and new, please email Kathy Dale or Emily, Events Manager at Chesfield Downs

GOLF RESULTS
7-Day – On Saturday the mixed winter league played pairs matchplay against the course. A difficult opponent as no mistakes were made by the course. The winners scored a fantastic 6 up. Excellent score by Pat Ward and partner at 1 down

Tuesday – More Match Play this week. In preparation for all our summer matchplay competitions, our ladies played a 4BBB matchplay format. This was followed by a very informative talk from Jo Oliver, our very own knowledgeable and experienced pro golfer. Thank you Jo for giving your time and to Margaret Gentle for organising this for us. 

Thursday – St Patricks Day was very appropriate for the team event O’Sullivan Cup. There was lots of green on display and even some beer goggles!


The trophy was won with 79 points by Jenny Fever, Jackie Reid, Angela Hamilton and Sarah Faircliff.  Two teams came very close on 77 points – Lin Goodey, Rogie Taylor, Pauline Humphrey, Kathy Morris and Barbara Baldwin, Mary Hooper, Maria Mouncher, Ann Cullum. Well Done All

New member joins our Ladies Section - We are pleased to welcome Maggie Theaker to our Tuesday competitions. Maggie has yet to get her handicap, but I am sure that won’t take her too long.

Hertfordshire Golf National Passport (Herts County Cards) - These can be purchased after 21st March from the Herts Golf Union office at Chesfield Downs for £15. They offer discounts at more than 1300 golf clubs in England. An excellent purchase if you play at other courses.

Summer Knockout Competitions – There is still time to sign up for the Summer Knockouts – see the Ladies Notice Board for sign up sheets. Single and Pairs competitions open to 5-day and 7-day members

GOLF RESULTS
7-Day – On Sunday we played pairs Texas Scramble as a Stableford competition. A great fun format. Some magnificent scores – it was an amazing 45 points that won the day. Lesley Bonser and her husband Mike scored 41 to scoop 9th place

Tuesday – Friendly Foursomes was the format last week. A fast game for cold weather. The winners with a score of 75.5 were Katy Cook and Lin Goodey. And just half a shot behind, in 2nd place with 76, were Brigid Kerr and Susanna Chan. Well done – good scores

Thursday – Torrential rain all day Wednesday and overnight meant the front 9 holes were closed. Therefore our first Medal Qualifier of 2016 had to be cancelled.

InterClub Matches
Mail on Sunday match. We had some very close scores, but East Herts won 4 games to our 1. Commiserations to our team, who all played valiantly - Kathy Dale, Sarah, Lauren, Virginia and Marica. Unfortunately we are now knocked out of the competition …. until next year!

Our Pearson Team match at Bishops Stortford was postponed because of wet weather and 9 temporary greens. Rescheduled for 21st April

Captain's Newsletter - 5 Mar 2016


INTERCLUB MATCHES
Daily Mail Foursomes – Susanna and Virginia Chan played valiantly representing Chesfield Downs at Mid Herts golf club this week. With some very good ball-striking and no nerves on the tee, they kept up well against some very strong opponents. Unfortunately they were not able to win this time.

Mail On Sunday - Tuesday 8th March sees the second round of this national competition. Our team from Chesfield are playing at home against East Herts straight after the Ladies Tuesday competition. We can cheer on the team – Kathy Dale, Lauren, Sarah, Jackie and Marica

Pearson Trophy - Our team plays at Bishops Stortford this week, Thursday, 10th March. Good luck to all the team and enjoy representing Chesfield Downs – Liz Cooke, Patti Vincent, Lauren, Brigid, Megan, Kathy Dale and Jackie Reid

GOLF RESULTS
7-Day - This weekend we saw 69 brave souls battle it out with just 3 clubs and a putter! Some amazing scores (Why do we need 14 clubs???).  Best placed ladies section golfer was Lauren Pitcher.

Tuesday - A total washout - Rain stopped play!! 

Thursday - The first 18 hole qualifying competition of the 2016 season was played. The Price Vase was won by Lesley Bonser with 38 points, earning her another well-deserved 2 stroke handicap cut. Congratulations! 2nd place goes to Margaret Gentle on 33 points. Several birdies were achieved today – well done everyone.
