Winter 9-Hole Stableford Competition Jan-Feb 2016
The end of the Winter midweek season was celebrated with coffee & cake in the conservatory and presentation of prizes to the winners. This was a very popular and well supported competition, with 55 participants. Some excellent weekly scores in some wet and muddy conditions and some on frosty, bright sunny days. Congratulations to the winners:
  • 1st Susanna Chan with 66 points (with two scores of 19!)
  • 2nd Lesley Bonser with 65 points (just one point behind) 
  • 3rd Jill Bransby with 62 points (on countback from Di Rogers)

This week we start the 2016 Golfing Season with the Price Vase. Get your best game ready!!! And remember birdies restart Tuesday 1st March. 

A new trophy for 2015 – The Jean Ray Order of Merit Trophy. Points will be awarded for all midweek individual qualifying competitions. The updated results will be available on our ladies section website. The trophy will be presented at the Ladies AGM

Daily Mail Foursomes – Good Luck to Virginia and Susanna Chan who will represent Chesfield Downs at Mid Herts on Monday 29th February.

Cups & Trophies – Please return all cups and trophies from last year to Kathy Dale or Jackie Reid for 2016 engraving and presentation. Thank you.

7-Day – The Weekend Mixed Section Winter League continues… Saturday 20th February, 89 players took part in a Mixed Sections Stableford Qualifier in extremely tricky conditions. Best placed ladies section golfer was Pat Ward, followed by Megan Bonner, Jodie Lusby and Linda Brown.

Tuesday – A Captain’s Shuffle for the team Texas Scramble last week gave us some very competitive scores. The Winners with 68.2 scored were Patti Vincent, Brenda Harrington, Julia Goodwin and Katy Cook. They beat the team of Sarah Faircliffe, Pat Pollendine, Hazel Brunnen and Lesley Bonser into 2nd place by just 0.2 points.

Thursday - The Megan Bonner Par 3 Ladies Championship was a closely fought competition, with 4 players all achieving a nett 53 . But after countback the final result is: 4th Lauren Pitcher, 3rd Julia Goodwin, 2nd Alison Webber, and the Ladies Par 3 Champion for 2016 is our own Ladies' Captain, Kathy Dale.

Captain's Newsletter - 20 Feb 2016

“Remember, Remember, the 25th February……. Par 3, Coffee and Cake” - The Megan Bonner Par 3 Ladies Championship is held this week on Thursday 25th February. Madeline Fielder will be defending her title as Par 3 Ladies Champion. This will be followed by Presentation of prizes to the Winners of the Winter Stableford competition and tea and cakes for all of us in the conservatory.

Thursday – Sign up on HowDidIDo. Our first 18 hole trophy competition is the Price Vase on Thursday 3rd March.

Tuesdays – Sign up on the sheets on the notice board

Weekends – Also sign up on HowDidIDo and take part in the Mixed men's and ladies competitions every weekend until 20th March.

Friendly Matches - Tuesday 15th March - Practice pairs matchplay on our Tuesday competition day. Sign up on the notice board for the Captain’s Shuffle. Followed by a talk to the Friendlies Team about matchplay strategy by Jo Oliver, our resident lady golf professional. See Margaret Gentle or Pauline Humphrey for more information

Fundraising – Sunday 8th May Bridges of London Walk A Just Giving page has been set up by Megan Bonner so that sponsorship can easily be collected.   Good luck to all those taking part – let’s raise lots of money for the Garden House Hospice.

Pamper Night – Saturday 5th March. Chesfield Downs have organised a Ladies Night with a variety of treatments on offer. Facial £15 Gel Nails £15 File & Polish £5 and more. Free Yoga class, use the Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Bring a friend. Free for members. £5 for guests. See Paula for more information. Hurry, just 40 places available.

7-Day – Saturday’s Team Alliance was won on 89 points. With Lin Goodey and Lesley Bonser’s team coming 9th with 80 points.

Tuesday – Team Alliance – The winning team with 82 points were Shirley White, Lesley Bonser, Angela Hamilton and Di Rogers. Closely followed with 79 points by Lin Goodey, Susanna Chan, Brigid Kerr and Hazel Brunnen

Thursday – The final Round of the Winter Stableford. All 7 rounds have now been completed and with 55 ladies participating, this has been a popular event. It is now time to check the scores to find the winner. Thank you to Rogie Taylor and Lin Goodey for keeping all the scores up to date and making this such an exciting competition. The winners will be announced and prizes presented on Thursday 25th February.

Mail On Sunday Team Win Their Match - An excellent 4:1 win against Royston last weekend for our Ladies Team in the Mail on Sunday national competition. Congratulations to all the team Virginia, Kathy, Megan, Pat & Marica and good luck in the next round.

Fundraising – Sunday 8th May Bridges of London – A lovely 10mile sponsored walk through London’s sights, across 12 iconic bridges and finishing at Tower Bridge. Chris Bryce has kindly organised this for us. Full details of coach transport and application forms are on the Ladies notice board. If you cannot walk, perhaps you could sponsor someone. All money raised goes to the Garden House Hospice, Letchworth

Care Of Our Course – Use the pathways Access the 10th tee - please use the pathways provided, taking a short cut across or around the putting green will only cause damage. Access to the 1st from the 18th - please use the pathway to the right of the 18th green and avoid cutting underneath the putting green as this will also cause damage.

County Day At Porters Park – £1500 was raised to support Junior Girls golf in Hertfordshire. Prizes were a 4-ball round of golf at some very prestigious clubs. Our ladies were very excited with 4 winners from Chesfield Downs: Sue Watson won Hadley Wood, Lesley Bonser won Brookmans Park, Lorraine Palmer won Bishops Stortford and Maureen Martin won Harpenden Common. Congratulations to our winners. Enjoy your fabulous free golf days.

Saturday’s Pair’s Betterball was a battle against the wind with only two of our ladies brave enough to play. Well done to Lauren Pitcher and Pat Ward for playing so well!

Captain's Newsletter - 6 Feb 2016

Mail on Sunday - The Ladies team play their first round of the national Mail on Sunday competition this weekend. Good Luck to all the team – Virginia, Kathy D, Pat Ward, Marica and Megan.
Annual Subscription - Please pay your £5 to continue to play in the Ladies Section competitions.

Handicap/Scratch Knockout Update - First round match between Rogie Taylor and Margaret Fredjohn was extremely close, with Rogie winning on the 19th hole. Well done to both players.

  • Tuesday 23 February Captains Shuffle competition so that the tee times can be allocated.
  • On Thursday 3rd March, the first major 18-hole qualifying competition is the Price Vase. You can sign up for this on HowDidIDo from 11th February.
  • Thursday 25th February. The Megan Bonner Par 3 Championship sign-up sheet is on the notice board. A good test of short game skill. 
Remember to join us in the conservatory for cake and the Winter Stableford prize presentation immediately after the Megan Bonner Par 3 Ladies Championship, in which Madeline Fielder will be defending her title as Ladies Par 3 Champion 2015

PLEASE AVOID SLOW PLAY!!! The last two competitions have been very slow. Please do your part in keeping up with the group in front. Play “Ready Golf”. Pick up if you can’t score and make it an enjoyable game for everyone.

Sunday’s American Greensomes drew 41 pairs into the competition. I am delighted to report that Lin Goodey achieved FIRST PLACE with her playing partner, Frank Berridge, with an unbeatable 47 points. A really excellent score!

Aussie Rules – this can mean good scores or zero.
1st place Susanna Chan and Kathy Dale with 21 points. Closely followed in 2nd place by Marica Kelland and Pauline Humphrey with 20 points

Round 5 of the Winter Stableford is now complete. Just two more to play.

Update of Handicaps
Sally Weekes and the Handicap team have completed the annual review of handicaps. A list of revised handicaps and ladies who need to play more qualifying competitions to keep their handicaps current, are displayed on the Ladies Handicap Notice Board. Please check whether your name is on this list.

Congratulations to all the golfers who have had their handicaps cut from 1st March: Pam Blake, Megan Bonner, Lesley Bonser, Linda Brown, Kathy Carroll, Susanna Chan, Angela Chatterton, Jodie Lusby, Kathy Morris, Sue Oliva, Jean Ray, Chris Skeen, Rogie Taylor, Patti Vincent.

Ladies Club Championship - Eligibility
Also a list of players who have not yet played 5 qualifying competitions to be eligible to play in the Ladies Club Championship on 23rd and 30th June is displayed on the sign up notice board. There are still 8 weekend qualifiers and 10 midweek qualifiers to play in, so you have plenty of opportunity to make sure you have played sufficient competitions to enter.

Saturday 23rd January – This week LESLEY BONSER won 1st place in the Weekend Mixed competition. With a brilliant 43 stableford points, Lesley beat 86 men/lady golfers to win on countback. Congratulations!! A fantastic achievement.

An exceptionally windy day – it quite took some players’ breath away. But with just 5 clubs and a putter (who needs all 14 clubs?!!) some very creditable scores were achieved.

2nd Marica Kelland – 17 points, just beating on countback 3rd place Marion Dix also 17 points

Round 4 of the Winter Stableford this week.  Equal 1st Marica Kelland and Margaret Fredjohn scored excellent 18 points. Equal 2nd Jean Ray and Rogie Taylor both scored 17 points.

Lin Goodey and Rogie Taylor are monitoring all our scorecards – still 3 more rounds to go. All the up to date scores are available to view on the Chesfield Downs ladies website – Thank you Virginia for your help with these.
