Captains' Day and Evening

Captains' Day was a lovely sunny autumn day that saw 50 golfers playing for a team alliance prize that was presented to the winners at the evening celebration.   The scores were high but the triumphant team of 4 was an all-ladies team, who returned an impressive score of 99 points. Annette Axelsson together with Sue Brady, Emma Wood and Jodie Lusby, all of whom are new members, were each presented with a bottle of champagne and a voucher.  All players were fortified with Pimms and cake at the halfway house, where Amanda Macknight and Jean Ray had laid out a delicious assortment of savouries, cakes and chocolates, provided by the ladies.  And just in case we hadn't had enough to eat, we all tucked into burger in chips in the clubhouse after the game.

80 guests attended the evening celebration, with a disco following a 3 course  meal and prize presentation.  There was a high party spirit that made it a memorable evening and one of the highlights of my year as Ladies' Captain.  Thank you to all the ladies and their partners who joined in the fun and celebrated with the Captains on our special day.  Thank you too to the Ladies Section for the beautiful bouquet of flowers and to all those ladies who sent me cards, wishing me well for the day.

Autumn Meeting & Chris Leary Chalice

The sun shone brightly for the Autumn meeting today making it a pleasure to play in the the Chris Leary Chalice.  Forty ladies played and two others joined us for a tasty lunch of quiche, parmentier potatoes and salad, followed by fruit salad and cream.  The Chris Leary Chalice is a stableford qualifying competition and the trophy is presented to the winner at the end of the day after all the cups and trophies won since the Spring Meeting have been presented.  It was a full day of fun and frivolity, with plenty of banter and good humour.  Nearest the pin was won by Marica Kelland and Sarah Faircliff took the prize for the longest drive after an absolute 'monster' on the 18th hole. Margaret Gentle won the the best front 9 with a massive 23 points.  Pauline Harrison took the prize for best back 9 on countback with 20 points, just pipping Marion Dix into second place.  However,  Pauline Humphrey was the overall winner of the day with a fabulous 39 points on countback from Virginia Chan.  Well done to everyone who took part and a big 'thank you' to Joel and his team for serving us with such a delicious meal and helping to make this a memorable day for the Ladies.

PING Grand Final 2013

Pauline Humphrey and Margaret Gentle competed in the Ping women’s FourBall BetterBall national competition final on Tuesday 17th September at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.  The conditions were challenging as they battled the elements of wind and rain on the championship Karsten Lakes course. Despite this, it was a well orgainsed and most enjoyable day. The field was as strong as the conditions so they were unable to return with the trophy but enjoyed a fantastic experience and received many goodies from Ping for securing their place in the Grand Final.

Crown Champion of Champions 2013

Chesfield Downs G&CC was extremely well represented at the 2013 Crown Champion of Champions Competition at Cams Hall GC on Saturday 14th September.

Jackie Reid, the Chesfield Ladies nett champion achieved 7th place overall.  Kathy Dale substituted for Pauline Harrison who was unable to attend and recorded the 9th best ladies' gross score of the day.

Sydney Young scored a nett 77 in the Junior competition after having her handicap cut by 9 strokes last weekend following the Junior Club Championship.  Sydney is looking forward to joining our Ladies Section in the near future.

David Leishman, our Senior Club Champion, had a fantastic round and came first, winning the Champion of Champions Senior Trophy.  A brilliant achievement!

Kathy had the pleasure of playing with a winning 3ball. The 18 year old from St. Mellion, Samantha Giles, who plays off a handicap of 1, scored a gross 69 to easily win the Ladies Gross competition. As the marker of Samantha's card, it was the first time Kathy had ever recorded a score of 32 for the first 9 holes!

Angela Birkenhead from Ecclestone Park, the other lady in Kathy's 3ball, said her knees were knocking the whole way round as she knew she was playing well  She certainly was, as she was the overall winner of the Crown Champion of Champions competition with a nett 65.

Congratulations Sydney, Kathy, Jackie and David.  What a great day for Chesfield Downs!

Eclectic Cup 2013

Congratulations to Brigid Kerr who is this year's GROSS winner of the Eclectic Cup.  The Eclectic Cup, apart from the Club Championship is the only competition that is played over two consecutive weeks.  This means that a player must hold their form over two rounds. A tricky thing to do in golf, as we all know! Congratulations too to Annette Axelsson who is the NETT winner of the Cup.  Brigid will be presented with her trophy at the Autumn Meeting on Thursday 26th September.

Mercedes Benz Challenge 2013 at Hanbury Manor

Annette's Mercedes Benz Medal
Annette Axelsson
Congratulations to Annette who represented Chesfield Downs Ladies at the 2013 Mercedes Benz Challenge at Hanbury Manor yesterday.  This mixed competition is a play-off between the winners of all the club Mercedes Benz Challenges played in Hertfordshire over this year. Despite a par on the first hole Annette, found the first few holes tricky.  However, she had really got to grips with the course by the ninth and went on to earn herself 18 stableford points on the back nine, even though, she had a blob!  All players were awarded this lovely boxed medal as a keepsake of their day.  Well done Annette!
